Point Pleasant
The use of photography has allowed me to further question and examine the idea of home. I believe that home is a place to find comfort, rest and the ones you love. The beginning of my search for a comfortable, familiar place, led me to Point Pleasant, NJ, finding myself in a small town that was similar to where I grew up. The photographs function as a therapeutic way to deal with the loneliness of the city. A loneliness derived from learning to adapt to a different culture and fast paced lifestyle in New York. The images produced are of familiar objects or places. They are an understanding of the transient state of the objects as well as life. With the understanding of the temporary, I began to learn that no place is perfect. I desire to find a place where my beliefs, thoughts and background are accepted, but believe that we live in an imperfect world. The imperfections discovered in Point Pleasant allow me to better comprehend my longing for an eternal perfect home. I believe the city, as well as this town, have their failures and successes. Faults found in the city such as, lack of space, an egocentric mentality, and many detached people are not as true to that of a small town. The diversity, arts community and convenience of daily living are a portion of the virtues the artist has uncovered, noting these points are lacking outside of a city. This process has allowed me to understand that a place cannot determine any solidified guarantee of comfort, satisfaction or even identity.

This search then led me to a series of self-portraiture, examining the past in order to understand the future. Several image revisits childhood memories and locations as part of this process. Using role playing, I reflect on my upbringing and going back to a state of ignorance. Understanding that not one person has the same journey in life, the photographs provide a way to seek out my roles as daughter, woman, Christian and the other aspects that "define" a person. The images also address other components of defining a person through examining within myself my heritage, profession, and outward appearance. With many questions, photography allows me to continue on this journey of life without necessarily receiving the answers.
